Treo 650: Cingular - $179, Verizon - $149, Sprint - $199.Note: This isn’t really a review - I am obsessed with the Treo 650 - there is no way I can be objective.

The Treo 650 is simply art. I think I have an addiction to the Treo 650. Even if a study shows that it significantly raises my chances of being attacked by hyenas, I won’t be able to kick the habit.

Why do I like the Treo 650? Simply put: It’s the best combination of phone and data device that exists on this or any other planet.

Other critical components:
- The keyboard (Blackberryesque - I think it was licensed from RIM)
- The screen - great resolution - and it’s a touch screen unlike BBerry - so no need to Tab-Tab-Tab to get to the bottom of the screen
- Bluetooth - a good enough reason to upgrade any old cell phone
- Ease of use. Everything just works. No special server required.

Fun Stuff:
- The camera and Video Camera are pretty nice! I use the camera to snap pictures of my kids all the time!
Here’s one of my 3-year-old twins peering over my baby twins, who were probably 6 months old in this picture!
Big Twins and Little Twins!

What needs improvement?
- Echo problems - I was an early adopter and the first two treo 650’s I got had echo problems - the callers kept hearing themselves echo…
- Form Factor - For some people the Treo 650 is too big. The Motorola Q - expected out in a few weeks may be an answer for these people - if they like Windows OS on their phone….
- Fragility - is that a word? I mean if you drop your Treo onto the sidewalk - it may not survive. Get a good case to solve this. The folks at Speck Products keep sending me samples of cases that do an excellent job of protecting the Treo 650. They recently sent me a pink leather case as well - though someone else in the office grabbed it and I have not seen it yet!

All-in-all the Treo 650 is the best phone I have ever had. It’s not a Nokia as far as reliability and it’s not as light as a Blackberry, but it has the best combination of features that I want and need.

At this time of year I always start to think about a few things:

1) I wonder what the leaves look like in upstate New York…
2) Who do I know who will be in the right place to get me some really fresh cranberries for Thanksgiving (I haet the canned type)
3) What kind of holiday gifts should I be thinking about this year.

cell phone gift box

As a cell phone maven I am tempted to want to get eveyone on my shopping list a new cell phone. Get this - many cell phones are free - so how can I go wrong?

Trouble is that when you buy a postpaid cell phone you are committing to 12-24 months of cellular service. Which is great if you are going to be the one using the phone. When you are buying a phone as a gift you need to think about under whose name the phone will be bought. The person who signs up for the phone will be responsible for paying the bills for a year or two.

So how can you buy a phone for a friend?
Option 1) You pay for the phone (which may actually be free after rebates) and they pay the monthly plan.
Option 2) You buy them unlocked GSM phone and they pop in their existing T-Mobile or Cingular SIM card.
Option 3) You buy them a prepaid phone and some credit.

So while cell phones make great gifts (I wouldn’t mind if someone got me a Treo 700 when they come out… hint hint…) you need to make sure what you are giving and to whom you are giving…

The Sprint Sanyo MM-7500 looks just like any ‘ordinary’ clamshell cellphone, but be assured it is most certainly is not ordinary underneath. In fact, it’s not ordinary on the outside either; how many other phones sport a 96×64 external display that supports 262,000 colors? Yes, that’s right, a cellphone with an external screen with 262k colors! Also on the outside is the 1.3 Megapixel camera and integrated speakerphone/polyphonic ringer. When you flip up the lid, you are greeted with the 176×220 262k color screen and industrial chic backlit keyboard. Feature-wise, the MM-7500 has it pretty much wrapped up. Messaging is fully comprehensive, with SMS, MMS (for sending your amazing snapshots and videos), chat and email. Call features include an ingenious ‘meeting’ mode, which allows you to answer a call immediately putting it on hold, giving you enough time to exit the meeting you are in in a dignified manner. This makes the Sprint Sanyo MM7500 a powerful handsfree carphone for the regular driver. A Cell Phones for Pets????

I just got an email from Pets Mobility and they are selling cell phones for pets.

What can I say - I guess people will buy anything!

Actually from what I saw on their site it seems they are planning to use cell phones as a way to track pets. Which makes sense. A friend of mine who works in another office in our building says she needs one for her son too. I know they are doing this with GPS’s for kids. The way it works is that if your dog gets lost the person who finds him presses the call button and then it calls the owner. Then the finder can decide what sort of ransom he is demanding.

Get Rover a Wireless Phone - Darn-it!

For smarter dogs who can dial the phone themselves I would agree on a code - like if he’s at the neighbor’s place - bark twice!
